We, the Peace Initiative for Hong Kong Group, call for the international community to support the protesters in Hong Kong’s efforts to have a dialogue with the government – and through this take an important step toward democracy in Hong Kong.
Although the Hong Kong government has agreed to start a dialogue with students on Tuesday, October 21, protesters have faced police violence. This violence has escalated ahead of the upcoming Chinese Communist Party plenum in Beijing, which has caused a looming threat to the protesters. They may clear the streets ahead of the plenum, which would likely result in more bloodshed.
Therefore, we, the Peace Initiative for Hong Kong Group consisting of 33 NGOs, calls all parties and those who care for Hong Kong democracy, freedom, stability and prosperity to follow the situation closely, and if possible, to send observers to sites in Hong Kong, and signal to the Hong Kong government and Beijing Regime that you
(1) condemn and seek to prevent escalating violence against protesters,
(2) oppose a bloody clearing of the streets,
(3) ask the Hong Kong government to have a genuine intention of conducting a dialogue, and
(4) monitor the dialogue to help make sure it is transparent and both parties are sincere.
