Press Release
On December 27, 2013, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) paid tribute to veteran Tiananmen rights activist, Mr. Chen Ziming, for his “extraordinary contribution” towards promoting freedom in China. The NED recognized Mr. Chen’s sacrifice, courage and dedication during the years of his long imprisonment.
For the past forty years, Mr. Chen has fought for freedom in China from both inside and outside of prison, and his remarkable efforts have long drawn international attention. The Chinese regime arrested Mr. Chen in 1989 in retribution for his involvement in the student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square, sentencing him to thirteen years in prison. After his second medical parole release in 1996, Mr. Chen was confined under strict house arrest until his sentence ended.
Initiatives for China (IFC, aka Citizen Power for China) recognizes Mr. Chen’s historic and effective contribution to the democratization of China, and congratulates Mr. Chen for receiving the NED tribute. IFC will deliver this NED tribute to Mr. Chen in China on behalf of the NED.
