Details
In the midst of the sensitive transition of China’s top leadership, the country is facing a severe ethnic crisis in the north and west of China which will serve as one of the biggest challenges to the new leaders in Beijing. The ethnic unrest that has occurred in the past several years in the Tibetan regions, in East Turkestan (Xinjiang) and in Southern Mongolia (Inner Mongolia) have signaled to people inside and outside of China that there are critical defects in China’s policies toward it’s ethnic minorities and these ethnic groups are becoming increasingly discontent with the current government. The panel will discuss questions such as: What are the major problems in the ethnic policies? How are these problems related to the ongoing ethnic unrest? What are the political implications of the ethnic crisis to China’s new leadership?
